Hey, I am in year 9 and am having trouble with friends. There is one girl in my year who is really nice and a really good friend, but is, lets say, not the coolest person alive. She is nice but not really my type. Some of the girls in the "POPULAR" group like me, and think I am really funny. I get on really well with them and want to hang out with them more often, but I don't want to hurt my other friends feelings. WHAT SHOULD I DO???? Please Reply!!!! xx

Hi Little Star, you should remain friends with all of them. If your friend is really nice, why would you consider not hanging round with her? If you have a good time with her and enjoy her company then keep her as a friend. One day you may need her if your more popular friends become fickle and you may regret being unkind to her. Think of how would you feel if the situation was reversed and your 'uncool' friend was saying this about you. Popularity does not make someone a good friend and 'coolness' is irrelevant. Make sure you stay friends with all of them.

Hi! I've been it that situation myself, so I know how you feel! You are really lucky to have such a great friend and you should definitely hang out with her, she would probably be really hurt if you didn't.
Have a think about the popular girls, and make sure you don't just want to be around them because they're popular. If this isn't the case, you should be friends with them, but not to the point where you ditch your other friends. Perhaps all of you could hang out together in a big group? Hope this helps, and I hope you get out of that situation soon! xxx

Sometimes being in the "POPULAR" group isn't all it's cracked up to be. We are of similar ages seeing as you're in year nine. I'm heading into year 10 in September. From experience, I know that if you choose the "POPULAR" group to hang around with for the rest of your school years, you could end up falling flat on your face. Sometimes quite literally. That's my experience from the later years of Primary School. Since then I've made a fresh start. I went to a High School where nobody knew me. Where I could be myself. Make new friends. And it wasn't even hard, it wasn't like I was leaving friends behind. Now I'm happy. I take critisism from the "POPULAR" crowd in my stride. I hang around with one of the least popular people in the class. And you know what? For once I'm HAPPY. I don't care when people laugh at me when I'm hanging around the village on my own. I can always look forward to my friend coming over to my house or me heading up to Lisburn. And I've found that books are better companions than anyone my age in the village. I've had summer ROMANCES and ended up broken hearted because the guy I loved was MURDERED or was the sort of guy that I didn't want to hang around with. I've been a victim of DEPRESSION and PUJ (Pelvi-Uretic Junction) Obstruction. I've had people trying to force me to take DRUGS. And through everything that's happened, I've known I've made to right decision to drop the popular crowd. I was always able to turn to my FRIEND and I was able to tell her how I felt when the love of my life was MURDERED. And when I've broken up with my newest boyfriend, I know she'll be there with a box of tissues to help me get past the guilt of hurting him. Don't hang around with the "POPULAR" people just to fit in and avoid falling victim to them. If you do, I can almost guarantee that you will fall victim to them.
Best of luck. Meg xxx
